FORTS IN RAJASTHAN
Rajasthan immediately evokes images of vast sandy deserts, people in colourful vibrant clothes, hot spicy food, warm hospitality and huge forts and havelis. This semi-arid state of India is one of the most popular tourist destinations for foreigners visiting India. And rightly so, because this State has still carefully preserved the history, culture and pride of India. The best example of this are the myriad majestic forts dotting its landscape.
Ruled by the Rajputs, Rajasthan has a long connection with royalty. The innumerable forts in Rajasthan are testimony to the influence and grandeur of the kings. Most of the forts are perfectly preserved and in good condition. Some of them have even been converted to heritage resorts. The forts in Rajasthan are mostly located on a hill, looming over the walled cities, to have an advantage over the enemy and make the fort inaccessible. Recently six forts have received international recognition with Unesco including them in the World Heritage Sites. Visiting these forts is a truly enriching experience and provides a window to our rich cultural past.
Some of the famous forts are Amer Fort (Jaiput), Jaigarh Fort (Jaipur), Chittaurgarh Fort (Udaipur), Jaisalmer Fort (Jaisalmer), Ranthambhore (Sawai Madhopur) and Mehrangarh Fort (Jodhpur). Almost all the big cities in Rajasthan have forts. All these forts have withstood the forces of time and are a true example of Rajput strength and valour. Even the insides have been well preserved and one can see the articles used by the kings themselves. You can enjoy the striking mirror work in Amer, the stunning armory collection in Jaigarh, awe inspiring artefacts in the museums in Mehrangarh and Jaisalmer Fort or just admire how the Rajputs managed to create such wonderful mega structures.
Most of the famous forts have guides or provide audio tours to help you understand its history better. The entry fee is nominal for Indians. A visit to the forts in Rajasthan will transport you back to the era of the Rajput kings and queens, their indulgent way of life and dazzling extravagance. With such a daunting presence in the entire State, it won’t be wrong to say that the true glory of Rajasthan lies in its forts.
